Australia defeated Afghanistan by the thinnest of margins in a thrilling match. Rashid Khan’s blazing 48 off just 23 balls right at the end sent off some fireworks.

They were outscored by four runs, though. Australia, on the other hand, was more concerned with the straightforward matter of making it to the World Cup Semifinals.

Throughout the entire game, there was pressure. When Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis were batting together during their batting session, they appeared to be capable of scoring 200 runs, but they fell victim to some outstanding death bowling by Naveen-ul-Haq, whose four overs resulted in 21 runs and three wickets.

After a significant partnership between Gulbadin Naib (39/23) and Ibrahim Zaidan (26/33) in their bowling innings, Australia brought themselves back into the game when Afghanistan was 101/5. Rashid tonked a few, though, and the pendulum began to swing once again. Overall, the Australians’ hopes of making the semifinals are now in jeopardy after another weak showing.

Tomorrow at the SCG, Sri Lanka must defeat England if Australia is to advance. If not, the defending champions would be eliminated.
