Dr. Lachlan Henderson, the chair of Cricket Australia, stated on Sunday that he will step down from his position at the beginning of next year because of competing professional commitments.

Henderson, who succeeded temporary chair Richard Freudenstein in February of this year, said that his recent appointment as chief executive officer of health insurance company HBF in Perth prevents him from devoting the time necessary to lead CA’s board. He will still be a part of CA’s nine-member board of directors, though.

Henderson was reported by cricket.com.au as saying, “The new post I’ve taken in my hometown of Perth will make it impossible to spend the time required as chair, therefore I have decided this is the right moment to hand up the role.” He continued, “Serving as chair and helping oversee some of the wonderful work being done by the executive and across Australian cricket has been a real honour.”

Henderson, who served as the Western Australian Cricket Association’s chair until moving to Melbourne in 2017 to take the CEO position at Epworth Health, joined the CA board in late 2018. He now makes his way back to Perth, where he has long been involved in cricket as a player and administrator, to begin his new position.

After Freudenstein succeeded Earl Eddings, who resigned from the position in October 2021, CA will have a fourth chair in just over a year.

Henderson will formally leave her position in February of next year, and will be succeeded by current board member and former premier of New South Wales, Mike Baird, whose appointment has received the unanimous support of the CA board as well as the state and territory chairmen.

In the meantime, Baird, who presided over NSW from 2014 to 2017, joined the CA board in 2020 after serving as a director of Cricket NSW and serving as the company’s chief executive officer at the moment.

Baird praised Lachlan for his work as chair and expressed his excitement that he would stay on to contribute his significant business and cricket knowledge to the CA board.

“At a time when so much exciting work is being done to build and advance our national sport, it is an honour to play such a significant part in Australian cricket. I’m excited about the opportunity to collaborate even more closely with CEO Nick Hockley, his team, and everyone else involved with Australian cricket “Added he.
