Brazilian Football legend Edson Arantes to spend Christmas in hospital
Brazilian football star Edson Arantes do Nascimento known as Pelé will spend the holiday season in the hospital, his family and doctors have confirmed.
In order to treat a respiratory infection and reevaluate chemotherapy, the 82-year-old was taken late last month to the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo.
“[Pele] presents cancer disease progression and requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions,” Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital said.
Pele is the only athlete to have captured the World Cup three times, in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
He has experienced a number of health challenges in recent years, including issues with his spine, hip, knee, and kidneys. The former Santos and New York Cosmos player had surgery last year to remove a tumour from his colon.
Kely Nascimento, the daughter of Pele, posted on Instagram, “Our Christmas at home has been suspended.”
“We decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, it would be better for us to stay here with all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us!!”
We came to the conclusion with the doctors that it would be best for us to remain here with all the care that this new family at Einstein provides us for a variety of reasons. Pele has been regularly updating followers on his health via social media in recent weeks.
