Marciniak will oversee the Argentina-France final
Szymon Marciniak, a Polish official, will make history when France plays Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Sunday by being the first person from his nation to officiate a FIFA World Cup final.
Marciniak, who oversaw France’s triumph over Denmark in the group stage and Argentina’s victory over Australia in the round of 16, will have the help of fellow countrymen Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz for the much anticipated match.
The 41-year-old has significant UEFA Champions League experience and started last season’s first-leg semi-final match between Liverpool and Villarreal. Additionally, Marciniak officiated three games at the 2016 UEFA EURO.
At Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday, Abdulrahman Al Jassim of Qatar will preside over the play-off between Morocco and Croatia for third place.
On the second day of the competition, the 35-year-old officiated the 1-1 draw between the USA and Wales in the group stage. In December 2019, he oversaw the FIFA Club World Cup championship match between Liverpool and Flamengo.
Taleb Al Marri and Saoud Ahmed Almaqaleh, two other Qataris, will serve as assistant referees for Al Jassim’s match this weekend.
