PAK vs NZ: On Tuesday, New Zealand’s first innings score against Pakistan in the opening Test was 40-0. Although they have 10 wickets remaining, the visitors are still down by 398 runs.

Pakistan’s first-innings score was 438 when they were all out on Tuesday.

The home team was led by centuries from Babar Azam (161) and Agha Salman (103)

Salman was the last Pakistani to go out, but not before he had scored his first century in the longest version of the game. After captain Azam was run out in the first over of the second day without adding to his overnight score, he took centre stage.

In his 103 off 155 balls, Salman hit 17 fours. Along with Nauman Ali, who scored seven runs off of 75 balls, he contributed to a critical 54-run seventh-wicket stand.

The Kiwis had a chance to bowl out Pakistan for less than 400 runs, but Salman and the tailenders put on 63 runs to disappoint the visitors.

Three wickets were taken by Tim Southee, and two by each of Ish Sodhi, Michael Bracewell, and Ajax Patel.

Pakistan batted a solid 317-5 on the first day, thanks in large part to Azam’s battling hundred and a half century from the recalled Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Pakistan rallied from 110-4 thanks to their 196-run fifth wicket stand, with only Sarfaraz going in the final two sessions for the home side.

Spinners from New Zealand took three early wickets and another before lunch on the spin-assisting National Stadium ground, but it took until the very end for them to get Sarfaraz caught in the slip for 86.

At the end of play, Azam was unbeaten on 161 and Agha Salman had three wickets for the hosts as they attempted to rebound from their first-ever home whitewash at the hands of England the previous week.

Azam is the leading run scorer in Tests in 2022 with 1,170 after nine games.

Over the course of the year, he scored 2,584 runs, besting Mohammad Yousuf’s 2006 total of 2,435.
