Emma Raducanu, a British tennis player, has stated that she hopes to be fit for the upcoming Australian Open, which begins on January 16.

The 20-year-old British player had to forfeit her match after slipping and twisting her left ankle during the second round of the ASB Classic in Auckland on Thursday.

The Grand Slam begins on Monday, but the extent of the injury suffered by the 2021 US Open winner has not yet been determined.

“Hopefully, we’ll know by Monday or whenever the tournament starts,” Raducanu said. “We’re just taking it day by day and not expecting too much at this point.”

Raducanu rolled her ankle and fled the court in tears last week, with the score 6-0 5-7 in the second set against Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova.

“It was really unfortunate because I was feeling really good about my season and the physical preparation I did,” Raducanu said.

“I just had an accident on the court, and I’m not sure what I could have done to prevent it.”

Raducanu reported feeling “good” following an exhibition match in December and that she was injury-free, despite missing five games in 2022 due to injuries.
