Felix Auger-Aliassime says ‘I feel like momentum plays huge role in your confidence’
Felix Auger-Aliassime built a 13-match winning streak in a surprising three-week span during the end of the 2022 campaign, capturing championships in Florence, Antwerp, and Basel.
The Canadian then advanced to the Paris Masters semifinals and won three more matches, according to Adelaide International Tennis, helping Canada to its first-ever Davis Cup victory.
“I believe that your confidence is greatly influenced by momentum. Before the Adelaide International, where he is the No. 2 seed in the ATP 250 tournament, the 22-year-old Montreal native remarked, “For me, it’s been great in the last few months.
“I try to replicate it, not just like think it’s some sort of luck that you’re just trying to ride a wave on, or like think the stars aligned or something. I believe that success has its causes. It seems to be about realising the reasons behind your continued success and trying it again. It serves as an ominous warning for Auger-rivals Aliassime’s in the capital of South Australia, where nine of the top 20 ATP players will compete the following week.
Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, Holger Rune, Denis Shapovalov, and Karen Khachanov are among the illustrious competitors.
Many people will also be keeping an eye on Thanasi Kokkinakis, who won his first ATP title in Adelaide last year, as well as former world No. 1 and multiple Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
“I believe it’s the finest preparation for us as players. When asked about the tough competition he might encounter after receiving a bye in the first round, Auger-Aliassime said, “You want to be tested from the first matches you play.
“You kind of want to play the greatest players before the Australian Open starts, get tested, and see where your game is at. It’s actually good news for me. After helping Canada win the ATP Cup in 2022 and making it to a first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open, the Canadian has good reason to feel confident playing on Australian soil.
Positive recollections of Adelaide include Auger-Aliassime reaching the 2020 quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Andrey Rublev in three excellent sets.
“I clearly recall that game. I remember feeling wonderful, thought the No. 2 seed.
“I adore the surroundings here. Because of how fantastic I felt and the high calibre of that match against an in-form Rublev, I believe it was the right decision to return here. I’m hoping I can play well once more. But for the cool-headed Auger-Aliassime, who has sage advice from veteran advisor Frederic Fontang and renowned coach Toni Nadal, the objectives are straightforward.
He described his goals for 2023 as being the same every time: “to play well and grow from the player I was the year before.”
“I feel okay right now. A year ago, when the ATP Cup started, I was playing well. I’d like to think that I’ve improved as a player since last year. I certainly feel like that.
“Trying to be a little bit better, it’s going to be the same thing coming… I want to take home the largest awards.
