Hockey World Cup: Netherlands beat Chile to advance quarterfinals
Netherlands, the three-time champions of the Men’s World Cup, finished unbeaten in Group C with nine points from three victories, making them the first team to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 on Thursday. Chile was destroyed 14-0 in this match.
To finish second in the standings with six points from two victories, Malaysia defeated higher-ranked New Zealand 3-2 in another Pool C encounter. New Zealand, which is rated ninth, finished third with three points, two spots ahead of Malaysia, while Chile had zero points after three losses.
As a result, the Netherlands qualified directly for the quarterfinals, but Malaysia and New Zealand had to play crossover games.
After defeating Malaysia and New Zealand in their previous games, the Netherlands secured the largest victory of the tournament thus far thanks to a hat-trick of goals from drag-flicker Jip Janssen, who ended up scoring four goals overall, Thierry Brinkman, and Bijen Koen.
The Dutch scored at will against Chile, who were completely outmatched and outmatched by their opponents, opening the scoring in the sixth minute off their first penalty corner and adding goals in the 29th, 34th, and 44th minutes.

The Dutch won 17 penalty corners in total, six of which they successfully converted, and they essentially parked themselves in Chile’s half of the field.
Chile made some effective assaults in the last period and earned two penalty corners, but they were unable to take advantage of them.
