After losing to India handily by eight wickets in the second One-Day International at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, New Zealand dropped to number two in the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings on Saturday.
New Zealand has dropped to number two in the Men’s ODI Team Rankings as a result of the Raipur loss also leading to a series loss, allowing England, captained by Jos Buttler, to take the top rank.
New Zealand had the lead with 115 rating points going into the match on Saturday in Raipur. India was in fourth place with 111 rating points, Australia was third with 112 rating points, and England was in second place with 113 rating points.
With 113 rating points and 3166 total points, New Zealand is now in second place after losing to India by an eight-wicket margin. With 113 rating points each, England and India are in first and third place, respectively. India has 4,847 overall points compared to England’s 3,400.
India will overtake England as the top team in the ODI rankings if they win the series finale at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Tuesday and repeat their performances from the previous two games.
With regard to the encounter in Raipur, Indian bowlers under the direction of senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami were precise in their bowling, attracting good swing, turn, and bounce, and taking sharp return catches in an amazing show to bowl out the opposition.
On a field with some grass cover, Shami and Mohammed Siraj were able to rip through the New Zealand top and middle order, bringing them down to 15/5 at one point in 11 overs.
Despite some resolute shots, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, and Mitchell Santner were unable to save their team from the strain put on them by Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav.
India chased down the meagre target in 20.1 overs, gaining a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, and winning their second home ODI series of the year. Captain Rohit Sharma later hammered 51 from 50 balls while Shubman Gill stayed unbeaten on 40.
