Madison Landsman creates history with hat-trick in T20 World Cup
Madison Landsman of South Africa’s U19 Women’s squad made history on the third day of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 with a magnificent and match-defining hat-trick.
The leg-spinner all-rounder stepped up to deliver the 15th over of Scotland’s second innings, with the run rate rising but the chase still alive in what had been a tight match at Benoni.
However, the 18-year-old placed South Africa on the verge of a stunning victory, their first of the tournament, with three wickets in three balls, leaving the Scots reeling at 60/8.
Maryam Faisal was lured into a big shot by a flighted delivery with the second ball of the over, but she was fooled in the air and a top edge looped up to give keeper Karabo Meso a comfortable catch.
On the following delivery, Niamh Muir was persuaded to drive, spooning the ball into the covers, where captain Oluhle Siyo held on to the catch at the second attempt.
Landsman came up for the hat-trick ball with the potential to create history as the pressure mounted and the players began to encircle him. The spinner gave it lots of flight and once again enticed the batter, with Orla Montgomery going for the big heave and absolutely missing the ball, which clattered into off-stump.
