Murali Vijay ended his career as international cricketer
Murali Vijay has ended his career as an international cricket player in order to “explore new chances in the world of cricket and the commercial side of it.”
In his international career, which began in 2008 when he took Gautam Gambhir’s spot in India’s XI for the last Test of the 2008–09 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur, Vijay played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs, and nine T20Is. He last played first-class and List A cricket for Tamil Nadu in late 2019. He last represented India in the Perth Test in December 2018. In September 2020, he made his final professional cricket appearance in the IPL.
A traditional Test opener, Vijay concluded with 3982 Test runs in 105 innings at an average of 38.28. He was praised for his ability to leave the ball during India’s tour of England in 2014 and had a strong technique and tremendous patience against the new ball at his prime. His top score was 167 against Australia in Hyderabad in 2013, one of his 12 hundreds and 15 half-centuries.
“I am delighted to announce that I will be exploring new options in the world of cricket and the business side of it, where I will also continue to engage in the sport that I love and challenge myself in new and diverse situations,” said Vijay, 38. “I believe this is the next stage in my career as a cricketer, and I am excited about the new chapter in my life.”
