PAK vs NZ: New Zealand beat Pakistan by 79-runs in second ODI
New Zealand is now leading the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League standings after defeating Pakistan by 79 runs in the second One-Day International played here on Wednesday.
With 140 points after their victory, New Zealand tops the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, surpassing both Pakistan (130) and India (139) in the process.
The Kiwis also succeeded in levelling the series at 1-1 by recovering from their six-wicket loss in the opening ODI. The season finale will now take place on Friday at Karachi’s National Stadium.
The series championship game has significance for the CWCSL in addition to the bragging rights of series victory. With a victory, Pakistan may overtake India and move up to second place in the Super League standings, while New Zealand might widen their lead at the top, according to the ICC.
Pakistan (108 rating) slid to fifth place, one point behind India (109 rating), as a result of the defeat, in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings. With a grade of 115, New Zealand, on the other hand, maintains its lead in the rankings.
New Zealand decided to bat first and amassed a respectable total of 261. They owed it to the second-wicket partnership of Devon Conway and Kane Williamson, who put together a 181-run partnership. Williamson (85) was content to take a backseat as Conway (101) attacked Pakistan’s bowling assault on his way to his second ODI century.
Following that, the visitors lost all strength because to Mohammad Nawaz’s magnificent 4/34 spell. Pakistan’s aim of 262 was established by Mitchell Santner, who persisted and played a vital innings of 37.
In response, Babar Azam led Pakistan in scoring with 79 but struggled mightily during his 114-ball stint at the crease. The choice by New Zealand to field three spinners paid off as they maintained control.
With wickets falling consistently at regular intervals, the hosts failed to keep up with the scoring rate and eventually perished to the pressure of it.
Brief scores: New Zealand 261 in 49.5 overs (Devon Conway 101, Kane Williamson 85; Mohammad Nawaz 4-38, Naseem Shah 3-58) beat Pakistan 182 in 43 overs (Babar Azam 79, Mohammad Rizwan 28; Tim Southee 2-33, Ish Sodhi 2-38) by 79 runs.
