Continental Quotas for Olympic qualifiers revealed by FIH
The qualification road for the Paris 2024 Olympic hockey competitions, as approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Executive Board last year, was announced on Tuesday.
According to the FIH’s qualification system for the Paris Olympics, the competition will feature 12 men’s and women’s teams.
The host country, France, will receive a straight berth in both parts, as will five continental winners from the African Hockey Road to Paris 2023, Pan American Games 2023, Asian Games 2023, EuroHockey Championship 2023, and Oceania Cup 2023.
If France also wins the EuroHockey Championship in 2023, the runner-up will not qualify, but the quota spot will be assigned to the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification Tournaments.
The FIH will hold two Olympic Qualification Tournaments, each consisting of eight teams (16 overall), in early 2024 to fill the remaining six spots.
In early 2024, two FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification tournaments with eight teams each (16 total) will be conducted. The number of teams from each Continent competing in these tournaments will be set by Continental quotas based on the FIH World Rankings on January 31, 2023.
The teams filling each quota, and therefore invited to participate, will be based on performance at the Continental Championships. The top 3 teams in each of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments will qualify for Paris 2024.
