Harry Brook hit five sixes in one over against New Zealand
Harry Brook hit five sixes in one over as England warmed up for the first Test match against New Zealand in Hamilton with the customary ferocity.
On day one of the two-day pink-ball match against a New Zealand XI, Brook made 97 of the 465 runs that England amassed all out in in 69.2 overs.
Adi Ashok, a leg-spinner, bowled an over, and Brook defended the first ball before hitting the following five balls for maximums.
Ben Foakes scored 55, Joe Root had 77, and Dan Lawrence had 85.
To prepare for the day-night first Test of the two-Test series in Mount Maunganui on February 16, England will play just one two-day match under floodlights instead of the two that were originally scheduled, one with a red ball and the other with a pink ball.
This batting day was predetermined, and England showed their full offensive intent against a New Zealand Test lineup that includes pace bowler Kyle Jamieson, who has recovered from a back injury.
In order to start the onslaught, Brook batted down Ashok’s first ball into the off side, then defended the next ball into the off side before slog-sweeping the next ball over the mid-wicket boundary and out of the ground. Brook only narrowly missed scoring a century when he uppercut seamer Jarrod McKay into third man’s hands.
When the tourists take on the Black Caps at the Bay Oval, Brook, who scored hundreds in each of the three Tests of England’s 3-0 victory in Pakistan, will have the chance to join Ken Barrington as the only English batsmen to score hundreds in four straight Tests. Barrington achieved this feat twice in the 1960s.
