Following a 1-1 draw in their Europa League round of 16 matchups on Thursday, Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Antonio Adan secured a 5-3 shootout victory for the Portuguese team by saving a penalty kick from Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli.

The tie ended at 3-3 overall, with the Lisbon club, fourth in the Portuguese league standings, reaching the quarterfinals thanks to Adan’s save from Martinelli’s weak attempt.

After a brilliant ball from Jorginho set Martinelli away on the left and gave Arsenal the lead, Granit Xhaka followed up and smashed the ball into the net after his shot was saved.

Pedro Goncalves spotted home goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale off his line just past the hour mark and shot from just inside the Arsenal half, his 45-yard effort dipping into the net for the visitors.

In extra time, Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard had just the goalkeeper to beat when his shot was deflected off the post and into the goal by former Tottenham Hotspur forward Marcus Edwards.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard told, “I think we did enough in some periods of the game but for most of the game, we were not at the level that we should be,”

“Part of the game we did well but we didn’t play our best football. It was a tight game and it could have gone both ways.

“It is a big blow to go out of this competition, it was a big goal for us. But now we have to come back stronger and make sure we finish well in the league.”

In Spain, AS Roma under Jose Mourinho held Real Sociedad to a goalless draw to win the match 2-0 overall.

The Italians defended with stoicism, despite the home team’s dominance of chances. Last year, Roma won the Europa Conference League for the first time.

Bayer Leverkusen defeated Ferencvaros, a Hungarian team, 2-0 in the first half, and Amine Adli scored in the second half to give the German team a 4-0 aggregate advantage.

Teddy Teuma, Lazare Amani, and Loic Lapoussin scored for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium in their 3-0 victory over Union Berlin, which gave them a 6-3 aggregate victory.

In their first season of UEFA competition, they reach the quarterfinals, but the German team is eliminated after Janik Haberer receives a second yellow card in the final minutes.

Marcus Rashford scored a fantastic goal earlier on Thursday to propel Manchester United into the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Real Betis, securing a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Before Rashford scored the winning goal, Betis missed a number of chances in the first half from 30-yard range.

Dusan Vlahovic scored from the spot and Federico Chiesa added a late second as Juventus defeated 10-man Freiburg 2-0 to advance 3-0 overall.

Feyenoord defeated Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine 7-1 to advance 8-2 overall, led by two goals from forward Oussama Idrissi and captain Orkun Kokcu.

Despite losing to Fenerbahce 1-0, Sevilla, which has won the Europa League six times, won 2-1 overall. The Turkish team got a penalty kick that Enner Valencia converted.
