In a thrilling showdown at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Australia emerged victorious, defeating England by 33 runs in the 36th match of the ICC World Cup. With this win, Australia has strengthened their position in the tournament, accumulating 10 points from seven matches. They now need just one more victory in their remaining two matches to secure a spot in the World Cup semi-finals.

Australia’s defense of their total of 287 runs got off to an explosive start when Mitchell Starc removed Jonny Bairstow with the very first ball of the innings. Starc struck again to dismiss Joe Root for a mere 13 runs, leaving England reeling.

England found some respite with Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes, who combined for an 84-run partnership. However, Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins brought an end to Malan’s innings. England’s captain, Jos Buttler, could only muster 1 run before being dismissed by leg-spinner Adam Zampa, marking the fifth time Zampa had removed Buttler in one-day cricket.

Despite the valiant efforts of Stokes and Moeen Ali, Zampa claimed Stokes’s wicket as well. England continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and was eventually bowled out for 253 runs in 47.5 overs.

When Australia batted first, openers Travis Head and David Warner struggled, losing their wickets early with the team at 38-2. However, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne stepped up to the challenge, forging a crucial 75-run partnership. Smith contributed 45 runs before falling to Adil Rashid.

Labuschagne continued his impressive form, reaching a well-deserved half-century and partnering with Cameroon Green. Labuschagne eventually fell victim to Mark Wood after scoring 71 runs, while Green continued to accumulate 47 runs but missed out on a half-century.

In the later stages of the innings, Marcus Stoinis (35) and Adam Zampa (29) provided valuable runs, helping Australia reach a competitive total of 286 runs. England’s Chris Woakes was the standout bowler, claiming four important wickets, while Mark Wood and Adil Rashid each took two wickets.

Australia’s strong performance puts them in a favorable position in the ICC World Cup, while England will need to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming matches to keep their semi-final hopes alive. The tournament continues to deliver thrilling encounters, leaving cricket fans eagerly anticipating the next matches on the schedule.
