Usman Khawaja, the opener for Australia, will resume training on Tuesday after receiving the all-clear to participate in this week’s second test in Brisbane against the West Indies.

After getting hit on the helmet by a Shamar Joseph delivery last Friday, during the last few overs of Australia’s convincing 10-wicket victory in the first test, the 37-year-old batsman had to be replaced due to injury.

“Usman Khawaja has been cleared to play the second test match against the West Indies in Brisbane,” the team said in a statement on Monday.

“Khawaja was assessed again today and has no symptoms of delayed concussion. He will train at the Gabba tomorrow.”

If Khawaja had been deemed unfit to play in the day-night test, which gets underway at the Gabba on Thursday, Australia could have had to look for a new opener for the second time in the series.

Following Australia’s 3-0 series victory around New Year’s, experienced opener David Warner announced his retirement from the format. Steve Smith moved up to take his place.
