F1 Shift: 2024 Racing Calendar Sees Move to Saturdays for High-Speed Showdowns
Formula 1 enthusiasts are gearing up for a unique twist in the 2024 racing season, with Saturday races set to kick off the high-speed showdowns in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Las Vegas.
The deviation from the customary Sunday races for the first two events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia stems from a strategic move tied to the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan. With Ramadan starting at sunset on Saturday, March 9, 2024, race organizers have opted for Saturday races in Jeddah and Bahrain to respect the religious observance.
The intricacies of the schedule adjustment reveal the ripple effect caused by Ramadan. Not only does it necessitate the Jeddah race to be held on a Saturday, but it also prompts a rescheduling of the Bahrain race to the preceding Saturday. This decision is a logistical maneuver, as starting the season on a Sunday would leave the F1 entourage with a day less for the journey between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The substantial road trip of nearly 15 hours by car requires meticulous planning to ensure efficient travel and setup time.
Despite the apparent proximity of the race locations, the need for a day’s buffer is highlighted by the extensive travel time. The unique scheduling aims to streamline operations and maintain the rigorous standards of the F1 circuit.
Later in the year, the Las Vegas Grand Prix joins the Saturday racing trend, albeit for a different reason. The decision to hold the event on a Saturday is driven by a desire to cater to both American and European audiences. The optimal time to engage viewers in the United States while accommodating European fans is on Saturday night.
Renee Wilm, CEO of the Las Vegas GP, sheds light on the thoughtful approach: “We have found a solution so that European fans can watch the race with a cup of coffee at six or seven in the morning, just like it happens in the U.S. during the European races.”
For American viewers, the Las Vegas GP promises an exciting spectacle at 10 pm in the evening, ensuring a thrilling Saturday night for motorsport enthusiasts.
As Formula 1 embraces this shift in its 2024 racing calendar, fans around the world can anticipate a dynamic and innovative season, blending tradition with strategic adaptations to global events and audience preferences.
