South Africa has removed its Under-19 cricket captain, David Teeger, just a week before the commencement of the home World Cup, following his expressions of support for Israel. Teeger, who was set to lead the host country’s age-group side in the tournament scheduled to kick off on January 19, has been dismissed from the position. The decision was announced by Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday, and the organization is bracing for potential protests surrounding the tournament.

Teeger will continue to be a part of the squad as a player, but his removal as captain comes amid controversy regarding his public support for Israel. In October, he reportedly dedicated an award he received to Jewish soldiers, praising them as the “true rising stars” during Israel’s attacks in Gaza.

CSA issued a statement explaining the decision, citing concerns about potential protests related to the war in Gaza and the risk of conflict or violence, including clashes between rival groups of protestors. The organization emphasized its primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all participants and spectators involved in the World Cup.

The controversy surrounding Teeger’s remarks has already attracted attention, with pro-Palestine protestors reportedly picketing outside the main gate at Newlands in Cape Town before the New Year’s Test between South Africa and India, questioning Teeger’s selection as captain.

South Africa took over the hosting rights for the U19 Men’s World Cup from Sri Lanka due to the Asian nation’s government interference in the administration of the sport. The decision to remove Teeger as captain comes at a critical time for the team, just days before the tournament’s commencement, and raises questions about the intersection of sports, politics, and personal beliefs on the international stage.
