On Monday, Australian Test cricketer Usman Khawaja shared his thoughts on Babar Azam’s potential to captain the Pakistan cricket team following their disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024.

The team’s inability to advance to the Super 8 stage has sparked debate about Azam’s leadership abilities.

Nonetheless, Khawaja supports Azam, the current white-ball cricket captain, to continue leading if he feels up to the task.

“It’s Babar Azam’s decision to captain, if he can, he should,” were Khawaja’s words at a Melbourne event.

Khawaja acknowledged Pakistan’s abundant talent but noted that instability is detrimental to the team’s performance.

“Pakistan cricket team has a lot of talent. Expectations are high in Pakistan, the game is tough and only one team can win,” he observed.

He further remarked, “When I look from the outside, changes are constant in the Pakistan cricket. Selection committee, staff and players keep changing. Such a situation is difficult because stability is very important. When there is no stability, it is difficult for players to perform. Pakistan cricket team never sees stability.”

Notably, Pakistan was defeated by the USA and India in their initial matches of the tournament, despite seemingly having control of the games.

Following these consecutive defeats, Pakistan’s prospects of reaching the Super 8 dwindled, hinging on a loss for the USA against Ireland.

However, the match between the USA and Ireland was abandoned due to rain in Florida, with both teams receiving a point, thereby concluding Pakistan’s World Cup campaign.

Pakistan is set to play a two-match Test series at home against Bangladesh in August, which is their upcoming cricketing engagement.
