Alvaro Morata is on the brink of becoming AC Milan’s latest signing. Despite his recent avowal to stay with Atletico Madrid, he is set to make a comeback to Serie A. Morata and AC Milan have reportedly come to a preliminary agreement.

Famed sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that the transfer is all but done, with Milan prepared to activate Morata’s €13 million buyout clause. The switch offers Morata a respite from the intense Spanish media spotlight, which he has openly criticized.

Morata is expected to ink a four-year deal with Milan, swayed by conversations with Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Euro 2024. Ibrahimovic has been instrumental in advocating for Morata’s acquisition for the 2024/25 season.

Morata is slated for medical tests in Madrid this week, with an official announcement of his move to Milan anticipated shortly thereafter.

It’s worth noting that Morata has been vocal about the harsh criticism he believes he endures in Spain and his eagerness to return to Italy. Despite netting 21 goals for Atletico in the previous season, a goal drought, with only three goals since January, led to less playtime as the season wound down. With Morata’s departure, Atletico is on the hunt for a new striker, with talks for Artem Dovbyk at an impasse over the transfer fee.

Following his Euro 2024 victory, Morata discussed the support he received from Andres Iniesta and Bojan Krkic in managing his mental health and the pressures of representing Spain. In an interview with Diario AS, Morata remarked:

“It’s not the right time to talk about my future, it would be selfish.”

“I’m going to enjoy this. I send my thanks to my wife and family and Andres Iniesta. If it weren’t for him and Bojan Krkic, I wouldn’t have played in the Euros. They have been through what I have been and there is always light at the end of the tunnel,” he continued.
