Shaheen faces punishment for rudeness and missed meetings
Shaheen Shah Afridi is at the heart of a controversy due to his behavior during the T20 World Cup, which might lead to disciplinary measures and potentially exclude him from the upcoming series with Bangladesh.
The selection committee, including coaches Mohammad Yousaf, Asad Shafiq, and support staff, awaits a decision regarding Shaheen’s future participation. His conduct, described as non-cooperative and rude, particularly an altercation with Mohammad Yousaf and lack of engagement in team meetings, has been highlighted in official reports to Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. While some officials downplay the incidents as typical, others call for measures to ensure future discipline.
One suggestion is to revoke Shaheen’s permission to play in foreign leagues and possibly downgrade his contract status, though the final decision rests with the PCB chairman, who also has the authority to forgive the fast bowler.
The national cricket camp for the upcoming series begins on August 6 in Islamabad, with Jason Gillespie overseeing the preparations. Gillespie, returning from the Australian tour, spoke about the potential of several young players, saying, “I hope that there are a few who could be seen playing for Pakistan in near future. They are so talented and eager to play at the highest level.”
