- Javed will serve until the 2025 Champions Trophy.
- A permanent head coach will be appointed after the major event.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former cricketer Aqib Javed as the interim white-ball coach for the national team, following Gary Kirsten’s resignation last month, on Monday.
Aqib Javed accepted the role on Sunday and will serve as the coach until the 2025 Champions Trophy. The PCB has confirmed that a permanent head coach will be appointed after the major event. Additionally, Javed will take on extra responsibilities within the selection committee after the Champions Trophy.
Prior to Javed’s appointment, the PCB had appointed Jason Gillespie, the red-ball coach, as the interim coach for the white-ball team during the Australia tour. The vacancy arose after Gary Kirsten resigned from his position amid reports of a rift with the PCB.
Sources close to the matter revealed that the tensions stemmed from the board’s decision to remove the coaching duo’s selection powers. Kirsten, although publicly silent, was reportedly unhappy with this shift and felt sidelined, particularly with the growing influence of the current selection committee in discussions regarding team selection and captaincy.
Who is Aqib Javed?
Aqib Javed was a fast-medium bowler, known for his mastery of traditional and reverse swing, and had a notable career with Pakistan. He made his Test debut at the age of 16 in the 1988-89 series but often played in the shadow of legendary bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
After retiring from playing, Javed transitioned to coaching, where he made significant contributions, including guiding the UAE to ODI and T20I status and helping them qualify for the 2015 World Cup.
