ICC Board Meeting on Champions Trophy 2025 Postponed
The crucial International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting regarding the future of the 2025 Men’s Champions Trophy has been postponed until Saturday. The virtual meeting, which lasted only about 15 minutes, failed to reach a resolution and is now set to reconvene within the next 24 to 48 hours, sources confirmed on Friday.
During the meeting, both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) presented their proposals for hosting the eight-team tournament. However, the meeting ended with the ICC urging both parties to come to an agreement through “mutual consultation” with the assistance of the cricketing body.
Several options were discussed, including the possibility of holding the tournament in Pakistan without India’s participation, though this option is considered highly unlikely due to India’s commercial influence in the cricketing world. Another potential solution discussed was a hybrid model where most matches would be held in Pakistan, but games involving India would be played at a neutral venue, possibly the UAE. However, the PCB has already rejected this model, and a source within the ICC indicated it could still be considered.
In the event that such a model is proposed, the PCB is expected to insist that no matches involving Pakistan, including its match against India, be held outside of Pakistan. A tournament without a Pakistan-India encounter is seen as unlikely to attract significant interest.
Other potential outcomes include relocating the entire event to a neutral venue or postponing it. There is also speculation that the ICC may pressure Pakistan to accept the hybrid model by stripping it of its hosting rights, a move the PCB would oppose strongly.
The PCB has formally requested that the ICC present detailed, workable proposals ahead of the meeting and has called on the BCCI to submit its position in writing, along with supporting evidence for India’s refusal to tour Pakistan.
The situation remains fluid as the cricketing world awaits a final decision on the venue and format of the 2025 Champions Trophy.
