CAPE TOWN: Makeshift opener Ryan Rickelton struck a career-best unbeaten 213 to guide South Africa to an imposing 429 for five at lunch on the second day of the final Test against Pakistan at Newlands.

Rickelton, elevated to the opener’s role after Tony de Zorzi’s injury, resumed his innings on 176 and added to his total with ease despite Pakistan taking the second new ball. The left-hander, who recently recorded his maiden Test century against Sri Lanka, demonstrated remarkable composure on a pitch that favors batting.

The 28-year-old forged a valuable 106-run stand with Kyle Verreynne, who contributed an aggressive 74 off 88 balls. Verreynne dominated the scoring during their partnership, countering the Pakistani bowlers effectively in the morning session.

Earlier, Pakistan struck when Mohammad Abbas (2-70) dismissed David Bedingham for five, with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan claiming his fifth catch of the innings. However, Rickelton’s overnight partnership of 235 with captain Temba Bavuma set the tone for South Africa’s commanding position.

Adding to Pakistan’s woes, opener Saim Ayub suffered an ankle fracture on the first day, sidelining him for six weeks and raising doubts about his availability for the ICC Champions Trophy.

With South Africa already qualified for the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, they aim to secure a 2-0 series win after edging a tight first Test in Pretoria by two wickets.
