Three Players likely to miss out on Pakistan’s Champions Trophy squad
The ICC Champions Trophy will kick off next month, bringing together the top eight ODI teams—Australia, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The tournament will run from February 19 to March 9, and teams will compete for the prestigious title.
While all participating teams have announced their provisional squads, Pakistan has yet to finalize its Champions Trophy lineup. As the selection process continues, there are a few players who might miss out on the tournament.
Mohammad Wasim Jr, once a regular in Pakistan’s white-ball squad, has had notable performances in ODIs, taking 34 wickets in 20 matches at an average of 25.17. He also impressed in the ODI World Cup with 10 wickets at an average of 21.50.
However, his position is now uncertain due to the return of Mohammad Hasnain, who has made a strong impact in the National One-Day Cup and the series against Australia and South Africa. Despite Hasnain’s modest ODI record, he is expected to be preferred as a backup pacer for the Champions Trophy.
Usama Mir, Pakistan’s lead spinner during the 2023 ODI World Cup, has taken 15 wickets in 12 ODIs. Yet, the emergence of Abrar Ahmed and Sufiyan Muqeem might see Mir left out of the squad. Despite Mir’s experience, selectors might opt for the duo, who have played five ODIs combined.
All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz, with 406 runs and 42 wickets in ODIs, has been a valuable asset. However, vice-captain Agha Salman’s recent performances have solidified his place as Pakistan’s primary spin-bowling all-rounder, reducing Nawaz’s chances of making the final squad.
Pakistan is expected to announce its Champions Trophy squad soon.
