Former Bangladesh one-day cricket captain Tamim Iqbal was rushed to the hospital on Monday after suffering a heart attack during a domestic match.

The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in a 50-over Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match. He took part in the toss but later experienced chest pain. After receiving initial treatment on the field, he was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.

“He suffered a heart attack. From what I understand, his heart function has improved,” said Debashis Chowdhury, a medical officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), while speaking to AFP.

Tariqul Islam, a team official, confirmed that Tamim was receiving treatment at a hospital in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, and urged the public to pray for his speedy recovery.

In response to Tamim’s sudden illness, the BCB canceled its scheduled board meeting for the day, with several members visiting him at the hospital.

Tamim, who played for Bangladesh from 2007 to 2023, appeared in 391 international matches and accumulated over 15,000 runs. He remains the only Bangladeshi batsman to have scored centuries in all three formats of international cricket.
