Argentina have emerged as the highest-scoring team after the first 96 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the tournament producing a total of 280 goals so far.

According to international media reports, Argentina have scored 14 goals, the most by any team in the competition.

Lionel Messi leads the tournament’s scoring chart with eight goals, taking his overall FIFA World Cup tally to 21 goals.

The 2026 edition has also become the first World Cup in history to feature three players scoring seven or more goals in a single tournament. Messi is followed by Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, who have each netted seven times.

Mbappe has also extended his record in the World Cup knockout stages, increasing his tally to 11 goals.

The tournament has reached another historic milestone, with Enzo Fernandez scoring the 3,000th goal in FIFA World Cup history, according to the report.

Meanwhile, sports statistics show that referees have issued 259 yellow cards and 14 red cards during the tournament so far.

Earlier, Defending champion Argentina came from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2, securing a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Egypt stunned Argentina with two first-half goals after Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring before Mostafa Ziko doubled the lead.

Argentina had an opportunity to equalize earlier in the match, but captain Lionel Messi failed to convert a penalty after Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shabir made a crucial save.

Ziko also had another goal ruled out for a foul before scoring Egypt’s second to give his side a commanding 2-0 advantage.

Argentina mounted a dramatic comeback in the closing stages of the second half. The South American side scored its first goal in the 80th minute before Messi leveled the match three minutes later.

Argentina completed the turnaround with a late winner to seal a 3-2 victory and advance to the quarterfinals.
