According to several reports on Tuesday, Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook has elected to activate his $47.1 million deal to return for the 2022-23 season.
The 2017 NBA Most Valuable Player and nine-time NBA All-Star, who is 33 years old, is entering the final season of a $206 million, five-year contract.
Westbrook has played for four different teams over the last four years, averaging triple-doubles in his final three seasons with Oklahoma City before being traded to Houston in 2019 in exchange for Chris Paul.
Westbrook began the 2020-21 season with the Rockets, but was traded to Washington in December 2020 and remained with the Wizards until his trade to the Lakers in August 2021.
In 78 games with the Lakers last season, Westbrook averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game. The Lakers went 33-49 and missed the playoffs due to injuries to stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, which thwarted aspirations for a postseason run.
Last season, Westbrook, James, and Davis only appeared in 21 games together, with the Lakers going 11-10 in those matchups.
The Lakers hope to rebound under new coach Darvin Ham throughout the upcoming season.
