A lawsuit was filed against SnapChat

Snapchat has recently been accused of breaking an Illinois privacy statute relating to biometrics. The latest complaint has brought the company’s Lenses app into the limelight, claiming that it breached the law’s privacy requirements.

Residents from Illinois were said to have filed the case late last week, and their names were recently revealed as Maribel Ocampo and Adrian Coss.

Both users claim that the social networking app uses the special effects lenses function to scan their faces.

Furthermore, the pair has stated that their acts are in direct violation of Illinois’ existing Privacy Information Law, which forbids businesses from participating in such conduct without receiving written agreement from individuals who agree to such tactics.

The legislation states that any information linked to a person’s biodata, including facial scans, cannot be acquired at random.

This Act, which was approved in 2008, has a lengthy explanation regarding how firms may be fined if they fail to take people under their wing when it comes to biodata gathering.

Similarly, the conditions require the corporation to set a schedule for how it will destroy any information or details it collects.

Firms that fail to comply with the legislation face a $5000 fine for each infraction.

While Snapchat has yet to respond to prominent news outlets covering the incident, many believe the platform has placed itself in hot water.

It should be emphasised that this is not the first time the app has raised concerns about the protection of user privacy.

In the past, we’ve seen the app intelligently discuss how the party that filed the complaint had elected to settle the case quietly.

These arbitration clauses are outlined in the firm’s “terms of service,” but in this case, neither accuser has decided to utilise them.

As a result, it’s fair to assume Snapchat isn’t the only one.
