Google claims that new eyeglasses can instantly translate languages
Alphabet Inc. has developed a new type of smart eyewear ten years after unveiling “Google Glass.” The wearable computing device, according to the business, can translate languages in instantaneously.
The first Google Glass device had a built-in camera that could record what the user viewed. This raised concerns about privacy. Google Glass seems to have a science-fiction feel to it thanks to the camera. The new device resembles ordinary spectacles in style.
The public was shown a working sample, or prototype, of the unknown technology this week at Google’s annual I/O developer conference. Google has not stated when the glasses would be available for purchase by the general public.
The new spectacles’ translating function was briefly shown, but no other information was provided. The company also refused to respond on if the new device would include a camera.
A demonstration proved that a person wearing the glasses can view spoken words in their own language when conversing with someone who speaks a different language. The description included English, Mandarin, Spanish, and American Sign Language translations.
The new device was the first of many in-development technologies demonstrated at the conference. The devices, according to Google, are designed to “ interconnect Google services with operating performance. This includes company-provided facilities for searching and browsing maps, as well as other artificial intelligence-based applications (AI).
Google’s director of product management, Eddie Chung, spoke with developers about the new eyeglasses. “What we’re working on is technology that allows us to break down language barriers, transferring years of Machine Translation research to eyewear,” he explained. Chung believes the product can deliver “worldwide subtitles.”
According to tech analyst IDC, Alphabet’s global smartphone market share is less than one percent. Legal issues relating to Google’s dominance in mobile phone software and other sectors are currently threatening the company’s capacity to develop new products.
Google also demonstrated several new shopping-related software tools. One allows users to record devices in a store and then ask the search app to identify those that are owned by Black businesses. Another accepts a product photo and displays nearby stores that sell it.
Google Maps will also start offering a new vision for several major cities later this year that combines Street View and aerial pictures. “To develop a rich, digital model of the world,” the feature says.
