Instagram now features auto-generated subtitles, which means it can transcribe any videos you watch on the platform automatically. However, you’ll probably have to activate captions before they display in the app, and the same is true if you wish to submit movies with captions.

Before we begin, keep in mind that auto-generated captions are now available in 17 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Vietnamese, Italian, German, Turkish, Russian, Thai, Tagalog, Urdu, Malay, Hindi, Indonesian, and Japanese. Instagram intends to expand its language support in the future.

If you only want to view videos with captions or want to publish a video with subtitles, here’s how to switch captions on and off on Instagram for iPhone and Android.

CAPTIONS FOR ALL VIDEOS IN YOUR FEED CAN BE ON OR OFF

Automatic captions on Instagram are disabled by default. You just need to change a single option to enable subtitles for every movie that shows in your stream. You may turn off subtitles by repeating these procedures.

In the lower right corner of the screen, tap your profile.
Select Settings from the hamburger menu in the upper right corner of the screen.

Toggle the Captions option on by going to Account > Captions. If you want to turn off the captions, just toggle the option back on.

FOR A SINGLE VIDEO, TURN ON CAPTIONS

If you don’t want subtitles on every video you watch, you may turn them on for only one of them. This is how you do it:

In the top-right corner of a video, tap the three dots.

If the video supports subtitles, a Manage Captions option will appear.
Toggle the Captions option on or off.

ADDING CAPTIONS TO A VIDEO

Instagram’s auto-generated caption overlays are also useful for creators since they eliminate the need to transcribe videos and then add caption overlays. When writing your post, follow these steps to turn captions on or off:

Begin by uploading a video from your computer or creating one on Instagram.

Before you submit your video, pick Advanced Settings from the menu that displays after you’ve completed making any adjustments.
Toggle the Show Captions option on or off under Accessibility.

You can always switch subtitles on after you’ve posted a video if you forget.

Tap Edit after tapping the three dots in the top-right corner of your video.
