- Elon Musk told Twitter staff the company needs to become more useful if it wants to reach 1 billion users.
- He compared it to WeChat, a Chinese mega app that combines social networking, money, gaming, and even ride-hailing.
- “If we can recreate that with Twitter, we’ll be a great success,” he said.
Elon Musk also praised TikTok’s algorithm for being “boring,” suggesting that “we could hone Twitter in the same way to be interesting.” He emphasised the importance of Twitter being better at surfacing news, “I think Twitter can be much better about informing people of serious issues.”

Musk emphasised his desire for Twitter to rely more heavily on subscriptions and fees on the call, proposing that individuals could pay to be verified. At one point, he proposed the creation of a “irony” label to indicate the motive behind a tweet.
He also reiterated his desire to crack down on bots and spam, adding that “it needs to be much more expensive to have a troll army.” As a show of good faith, the Tesla CEO threatened to cancel the transaction over the bot issue, prompting Twitter to grant him comprehensive data access.

He wouldn’t say if he’d continue on as Twitter’s CEO after taking over, but he did say he’d be heavily involved in the company’s product and operations.
Musk changed the subject to space, the age of the earth, and possibly dead civilizations on other worlds at the conclusion of the discussion, adding he had seen “no actual evidence for aliens, yet.”
