Exoplanet Mission Based in Cardiff Receives £30M

Cardiff  Exoplanet mission gets £30M. July 2022. New money will enable Cardiff University scientists study 1,000 known exoplanets.

Ariel’s goal is to characterise the atmospheres of 1,000 exoplanets to understand their chemical composition, origin, evolution, and host star.

Ariel will revolutionise exoplanet composition, creation, and evolution.

Regular scientific data will be delivered during its four-year operational phase.

Ariel is a 17-country worldwide collaboration led by UCL’s Professor Giovanna Tinetti, Cardiff University, Oxford University, and STFC’s RAL Space at Harwell Space Cluster in Oxfordshire.

Physics and Astronomy scientists are analyzing the mission’s performance and constructing, testing, and fine-tuning Ariel’s data algorithms.

By committing £30m and leading the Ariel consortium, we positioned the UK at the center of international space research, creating new opportunities for space enterprises and academics across the country.

“With Ariel, we’re entering a fascinating new era in our research of extrasolar planets,” stated Professor Matt Griffin, Head of the Cardiff Astronomy Instrumentation Group and UK Co-PI in the Ariel Consortium.
