The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced last week that smartphone users will be able to make UPI payments using their credit cards. The service is only announced for RuPay credit cards. This simply implies that you will be able to make UPI payments if you have a RuPay credit card. However, it is entirely up to the UPI platform, such as Google Pay or PhonePe, to enable the option and allow you to use their RuPay-based credit cards to make payments. Google Pay is currently one of the most popular UPI services in India.

According to the RBI, making UPI payments with a credit card will be as simple as making them with a debit card. All you have to do now is add your credit card to the UPI payment platform. However, there is a catch to the new rule. At the moment, you will only be able to pay bills such as electricity and gas, as well as recharge mobile phones. This simply means that you won’t be able to use Google Pay to transfer or receive money, or even to pay at your local shop with your credit card.
