Facebook adds a new chronologically ordered tab called Feeds

Today, Facebook announced a fairly significant update to its app. The main feed that appears when you launch the app is now called Home, which makes sense and is long overdue. However, this is not the major news.

Feeds, a new tab that has been added to the app, is the major news. This tab is arranged in reverse chronological order, similar to what the Home tab was before the algorithm took control.

The Feeds tab has its own filters; you may choose to see everything or only content from your friends, groups, pages, or favourites; this is a curated list of the friends and pages you care most about.

Facebook currently positions the Home feed as “more of a discovery engine enabling you to uncover and follow new content and creators through recommendations.” This is balanced by Feeds, where you may “access content from the individuals and communities you are already linked to.” No “Suggested For You” posts exist in Feeds.

The new Home and Feeds tabs are beginning to roll out today for a subset of iOS and Android Facebook users. Everyone on Facebook should receive them within the following week.

Note that the bar containing these tabs is located at the bottom of the Facebook app on iOS and at the top of the app on Android. The tabs on the shortcut bar will change based on the most-used sections of the application, but you may customise and pin tabs to make their placement permanent if you so want.
