Instagram is developing a ‘Reel’ feature similar to TikTok.
Instagram is now testing a new feature that would convert all user-uploaded videos into the short-form ‘Reel’ format popularized by TikTok.
Users will soon be able to share their videos in what the app’s parent company, Meta, is calling “Reels.” This was apparently shown in a screenshot being tested by Instagram.
Like TikTok’s ‘Duet’ function, this new Reel format allows users to remix a video by using its soundtrack to create a new Reel.

“We’re testing this feature as part of our efforts to simplify and improve the video experience on Insta,” a spokesperson from Meta said in an email to TechCrunch.
To prevent your Insta videos from remix. you can either disable the feature in your account settings or do it individually for each video.
Videos similar to TikTok have been trending on Facebook and Insta. They now account for almost 20% of Instagram views. Chief Product Officer Chris Cox has referred to Reels as a “bright point” in the company. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has remarked that they are the fastest growing content type on the platforms.
If all videos were converted to Reels, Meta would have more material to circulate. Which in turn would increase the amount of time users spend on the site and the number of ads they see.
As Mr. Mosseri pointed out, Insta is facing “some extremely strong competition right now… There are several newer competitors to TikTok and YouTube.
In response, Instagram merged long-form videos from IGTV with those from InstaFeed into a single format called “InstaVideo.”
