Apple AirTag helps police recover stolen luggage and other goods

• Apple’s AirTag has been used to find lost items in a number of cases.
• Airport employee Giovanni De Luca, 19, is accused of stealing two bags containing valuables worth over $15,000.
• The police are lauding the excellent cooperation between the airport administration and the police in catching the criminal.

Recently, Apple’s AirTag has made headlines for both positive and bad reasons. Although it has been used to stalk people, the technology has been useful in finding lost objects.

The AirTag had been credited with helping find stolen bags in a number of stories. This time, an airport employee, age 19, took luggage with an AirTag before being apprehended with things from another stolen bag.

Finding stolen or missing items is made much easier by the Apple AirTags and FindMy app. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) issued a news release to announce the grand theft charges against Giovanni De Luca’s arrest.

The guy is accused of stealing two different pieces of luggage from the airport while working as a subcontractor at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport.

In the first occurrence, an airport suitcase with goods valued at around $1,600 vanished. Fortunately, the bag was equipped with an AirTag, allowing for its tracking to the Kathy Court neighborhood in Mary Esther.

After that, another passenger stated that his luggage had been burglarized of valuables worth over $15,000 in total.

De Luca was visited in his home by the police after they were able to identify him as an airport employee residing in the Kathy Court neighborhood.

The AirTag and the missing items from the second incident were found during the visit to De Luca’s house. De Luca also acknowledged stealing the Apple AirTag from the first victim’s suitcase after rummaging through it. Other items from the first bag, however, have not yet been located.

The police are lauding the excellent cooperation between the airport administration and the police in catching the criminal. The fact that the offender was apprehended is commendable; it’s clear that he had no idea what an Apple AirTag was or could do.
