Twitter is now accepting researchers for its Twitter Moderation Research Consortium
This year, Twitter introduced the Twitter Moderation Research Consortium (TMRC). It is actually a group of experts from academia, civil society, nongovernmental organizations, and journalism who want to study Twitter’s platform governance issues. The good news is that membership in TMRC used to be limited to a few trusted partners, but now Twitter is letting all researchers apply.
If they want to join the TMRC, all applicants must show that they are part of one of the organizations that are allowed to do so.
They must have done “data-driven” analysis before and know how the data can be used for the public good. Aside from that, they must also know how to protect their research using “industry-standard” systems.
Ineligible applicants include undergraduate students, industry and government officials, and groups who’d plan to share the TMRC’s data with governments or other outside parties. |
“By providing academics and researchers with access to specific, granular data (not just aggregated reports), we enable them to find insights and contextualize information in a way that increases the visibility of the reports themselves.
Our goal is to remain transparent about the activity we identify on Twitter while addressing the considerable safety, security, and integrity challenges that come with disclosures of this kind.” Twitter’s head of safety and integration wrote a blog post.
Successful TMRC applicants will have a history of independent research or have met criteria that “show a capacity to use TMRC data for a qualifying purpose.”
New TMRC members will have access to Twitter operations data dating back to 2018. But the company says it wants data about persistent platform manipulation campaigns to be made public.
