Google employees are worried about OpenAI’s new chatbot, ChatGPT
Google Employees at a recent Google all-hands meeting voiced concerns that OpenAI’s newest chatbot, ChatGPT, is gaining ground on Google in the race to become the dominant player in the AI industry.
According to sources, which did not name its source, one employee question referred to Google’s current reluctance to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its search function as a “missed opportunity,” especially considering that the company has already developed LaMDA, an AI chatbot that was labelled sentient(opens in new tab) by Google engineer Blake Lemoine in June 2022 before he was fired in July.
ChatGPT is a real-time chat bot that, as Googlers like to point out, is right in the company’s wheelhouse because it provides users with both true information expertise and creative solutions to their questions and suggestions.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, and Jeff Dean, head of Google’s AI division, responded that the company’s reluctance to integrate AI into search results had nothing to do with a technical inability to do so and everything to do with Google’s desire to maintain its credibility as a reliable source of information, which AI cannot always guarantee.
While Google may have a point, there is validity to the arguments made by unbiased experts. It has long been feared that language models could steal market share from Google, as Brian Nowak, Morgan Stanley’s senior Alphabet analyst, told sources. This would “disrupt [its] position as the entry point for users to the Internet.”
However, Nowak did remark that LaMDA is still under development, and that Google is continuing to conduct research(opens in new tab) and introduce new AI-driven products, so it may be some time before Google experiences such disruption.
For instance, the Tensorflow team at Google launched a machine learning extension for Google Sheets in December 2022. This feature was geared toward those who were new to artificial intelligence.
When it comes to the renewed battle for internet domination, Google has no intention of sitting back and waiting to be overtaken by OpenAI or other AI providers.
