The race to be first in AI technology is heating up. The growing popularity of AI chatbots, particularly OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is posing issues for Google.

According to sources, Google aims to introduce a search engine with chatbot features, as well as over 20 other AI initiatives, to compete with rivals. This follows Google’s upper management’s “code red” pronouncement last month to compete with ChatGPT.

Microsoft‘s new agreement with OpenAI, as well as efforts to integrate ChatGPT into Bing, add to Google’s difficulties.

As a result, with the participation of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google is upgrading its chatbot search engine. Company executives sought advise from the founders on how to compete with the growing competition.

The chatbot demo will focus on accuracy, safety, and combatting misinformation. The New York Times reported on Google’s numerous AI projects in the works, including an image generating tool, a product prototype testing software, and a green screen option for YouTube akin to TikTok.

Nonetheless, despite mounting competition worries, Google is proceeding with AI technology releases with caution and improving its product approval processes, including fairness and ethical evaluations. The company intends to present its forthcoming projects at the I/O conference in May.

The decision shows that Google understands the growth of ChatGPT and wishes to remain ahead of the curve. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company is prepared to show  “some entirely new experiences for users, developers, and businesses.”

This comes at a cost, though, as Google was chastised for cutting off nearly 12,000 people.

The CEO wrote in a memo to staff: I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI. To fully capture it, we’ll need to make tough choices.
