SAN FRANCISCO: Elon Musk auctioned off furniture, decorations, kitchen equipment, and other items from the tech firm’s downtown San Francisco headquarters on Wednesday, and a Twitter bird statue sold for $100,000.

An online auction of “surplus corporate office assets of Twitter” that lasted just more than 24 hours included a 10-foot neon light in the shape of Twitter’s bird logo, which drew a winning bid of $40,000, according to Heritage Global Partners auction service.

Espresso machines, ergonomically adjusted desks, televisions, bicycle-powered charging stations, pizza ovens, and a colorful planter styled like an “@” sign were among the 631 lots.

Musk stated in December that dramatic cost cuts at Twitter had mended the firm’s dismal finances as he sought a new CEO for his struggling social media setup.

At the time, the mercurial billionaire told a live chat platform that without the adjustments, which included firing more than half of Twitter’s staff, the firm would have lost $3 billion each year. Musk claimed to have been “cutting costs like crazy” at the $44 billion platform he purchased.

Musk sacked over half of Twitter’s 7,500-person workforce just weeks after taking over the firm, raising concerns that the company was understaffed to handle content moderation and frighten governments and advertisers.

Musk stated that his plan was to cut expenses while increasing income, and that a new subscription service called Twitter Blue, which offers users the coveted blue tick for a price, would help him achieve that goal.
