Italy warns hackers targeting known server vulnerability
Thousands of computer servers worldwide have been targeted by a ransomware cyber operation targeting VMware (VMW.N) ESXi servers, according to Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN), which warned organisations to take action to secure their systems.
The hacking attack attempted to exploit a software weakness on a wide scale.
According to a VMware spokesman, the business is aware of the events and has published fixes for the two-year-old vulnerability that is being exploited in February 2021, recommending its clients to do so if they have not already.
According to the ACN, servers in other European nations such as France and Finland, as well as the United States and Canada, have been compromised.
Dozens of Italian organisations were likely compromised, and many more were urged to take action or risk being locked out of their systems.
Customers of Telecom Italia (TLIT.MI) experienced internet problems early on Sunday, although the two issues were not thought to be related.
Officials in the United States said they were examining the impact of the reported occurrences.
“CISA is working with our public and commercial sector partners to examine the implications of these reported incidents and provide help where needed,” said the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
