SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter‘s owner, Elon Musk, has revealed plans to release the highly guarded algorithm used to promote tweets to users.

Musk stated in his own tweet that the code would be “open source” before the end of March.

The algorithm, which has been kept secret for a long time, will suddenly be accessible and scrutinized by everyone. According to Musk, this step will result in considerable improvements in the quality of tweet recommendations.

“People will discover many silly things, but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!” Musk tweeted.

“Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality.”

Musk claimed that Twitter‘s recommendation mechanism is extremely complicated and not fully understood within the firm.

“We’re developing a simplified approach to serve more compelling tweets, but it’s still a work in progress,” Musk added.

According to a foundation for the software industry, making the code open source would allow developers, including potential competitors, to put their own variations on the algorithm.

Since billionaire Musk took over Twitter in October, the platform has been plagued by outages, layoffs, and a lack of content regulation, prompting advertisers to flee.

Yet, no big alternative to Twitter has developed thus far, leaving world leaders, politicians, celebrities, and businesses with no choice but to continue communicating via the network.

Twitter is apparently operating on a skeleton workforce following many waves of layoffs that saw more than two-thirds of its employees let go, leaving it exposed to outages as well as disinformation and dangerous content.

Musk has attempted to wean Twitter from advertising and promote subscriptions as a new revenue stream—an idea that Meta is also pursuing—but the results have been underwhelming thus far.

Google, the parent company of Facebook, announced earlier this month that it is developing a new “text sharing” social media network that might compete with Twitter.

“We’re exploring a standalone, decentralized social network for sharing text updates,” Meta, which owns Instagram as well, sent a brief statement via email.

“We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,” the statement went on to say.
