Chinese scientists have made a significant leap forward in the development of quantum computers, unveiling a new prototype named “Jiuzhang 3.0” capable of detecting 255 photons. This remarkable achievement marks a new high in computing speed, surpassing the world’s fastest supercomputers by a factor of 10 quadrillion times in solving Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) problems.

Led by renowned Chinese quantum physicist Pan Jianwei, the research team employed Gaussian boson sampling, a computationally intractable task for conventional computers, to demonstrate the extraordinary quantum computational speedup of their prototype. This achievement paves the way for solving complex problems in fields such as materials science, drug discovery, and financial modeling with unprecedented efficiency.

A key innovation in Jiuzhang 3.0 is the development of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detection scheme with a fiber loop-based configuration, enabling the detection of a record number of photons. This breakthrough significantly enhances the complexity and capabilities of photonics quantum computing.

The research team also achieved pseudo photon number resolving by demultiplexing photons into time bins through delays. This technique further improves the accuracy and precision of Jiuzhang 3.0’s computations.

Compared to its predecessor, Jiuzhang 2.0, Jiuzhang 3.0 boasts a million-fold speedup in solving GBS problems. Moreover, the most complex GBS samples that Jiuzhang 3.0 can calculate in just one microsecond would take the world’s fastest supercomputer, Frontier, over 20 billion years to complete.

Quantum computing holds immense potential for revolutionizing various industries and solving complex challenges that are currently intractable for classical computers. The development of Jiuzhang 3.0 represents a significant step towards harnessing the power of quantum mechanics to solve real-world problems and drive technological advancements.
