Data Breach at Rock County Human Services: Employee, Client Info Stolen
The Rock County Human Services Department (HSD) has experienced a cybersecurity attack that resulted in the theft of employee and client information. The attack, which involved a phishing email campaign, occurred on or about September 29th.
According to a notice posted on the Rock County website, the attack was carried out by a “bad actor” who deployed a phishing email campaign targeting HSD employees. The notice states that the attack resulted in unauthorized access to certain systems and the theft of some data that was determined to contain protected personal health information (PHI).
The stolen data includes Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical information, driver’s license numbers, financial account information, and health insurance information. The HSD is currently reviewing the extent of the data breach and is taking steps to notify affected individuals.
The HSD is also working with third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the attack and implement additional security measures to prevent future breaches. In the meantime, the HSD is encouraging affected individuals to take steps to protect their identities, such as placing a fraud alert on their credit reports.
