Netflix ending support for Apple TV devices
Netflix will soon stop supporting select Apple TV devices, according to an email sent to users. Starting July 31, the second and third-generation Apple TV models will no longer support Netflix.
The confusion among users regarding whether the app will cease to function entirely or simply stop receiving updates has been clarified: Netflix will stop providing updates. This decision aims to ensure the “best possible Netflix viewing experience,” as the older hardware is now considered outdated.
Notably, the second-generation Apple TV was released 13 years ago and is classified by Apple as a “vintage product” alongside the third generation.
The second and third-generation Apple TV models were released before the advent of tvOS and lack access to the App Store. Over the years, these devices have gradually lost support for various apps and services.
This move mirrors similar actions by other companies. In 2021, Google discontinued the YouTube app on older Apple TV models, and Crunchyroll followed suit a few years later.
If Netflix is no longer working on your second or third-generation Apple TV, it’s time to consider upgrading to newer models like the Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K, which are unaffected by this decision and continue to support Netflix.
