PTA shares update on Starlink launch in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has provided a significant update regarding the launch of Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, in Pakistan.
During a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, the PTA Chairman revealed that Starlink had applied for a license on February 24, 2022, and is now in contact with the country’s regulatory bodies.
Before initiating its satellite internet services, Starlink must register with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and PSB. The PTA will proceed with the licensing process once the registration is complete.
In addition to Starlink, Shanghai Space Technology is also making its way into Pakistan’s market, which is anticipated to boost internet connectivity and technology innovation.
The PTA clarified that government clearance is a prerequisite before issuing a license to Starlink. The Chairman added that Starlink has assured compliance with Pakistan’s regulatory policies and systems.
The committee has also decided to involve the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) to explore space technology regulations. Concerns were raised about the PTA’s delegation of responsibilities to other organizations.
Elon Musk earlier acknowledged on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he is awaiting the Pakistani government’s approval for Starlink’s launch. This came after Pakistani user Sanam Jamali requested Musk to introduce Starlink, highlighting its potential to enhance connectivity and opportunities in the country.
Starlink, developed by SpaceX, aims to deliver high-speed internet globally through a network of low Earth orbit satellites. This cutting-edge service offers low latency of around 20 ms and is designed to reach remote areas lacking traditional internet infrastructure. Starlink’s phased array antennas enable simultaneous communication with multiple users, promising a new era of digital inclusion.
