The National Cybercrimes Investigation Authority (NCCIA) has issued a warning urging the public to remain alert and avoid online fraud ahead of the New Year.
According to the authority, fake congratulatory links and gift messages are being widely shared as New Year celebrations approach. The NCCIA has advised people not to click on unknown links or share their WhatsApp verification codes with anyone, warning that cybercriminals often exploit festive excitement to carry out scams. The alert stressed that people should enjoy the celebrations but remain cautious to stay safe from fraudsters.
IT experts have also warned that cybercriminals are spreading fraudulent app files and malware disguised as New Year greeting cards on WhatsApp. These messages usually ask users to click on a link to view the card.
Experts cautioned that such links should be ignored, as clicking on them can lead to phone hacking. Sensitive information, including personal data, photos, contact lists and even bank account details, can fall into the hands of cybercriminals if these malicious links are opened.
