YouTube tightens monetization rules for AI-generated content

YouTube announced stricter enforcement of its policies on AI-generated videos.

YouTube has announced stricter enforcement of its policies on artificial intelligence (AI)-generated videos to reduce the spread of low-quality, repetitive and potentially harmful content on the platform.

The company said the updated guidelines are intended to clarify its existing rules as more creators use AI tools to produce videos.

According to YouTube, the revised policy does not introduce new rules but provides clearer guidance on the types of AI-generated content that could face restrictions.

The platform said it will focus on videos that rely heavily on repetitive AI-generated material or contain content considered misleading, manipulative or harmful to viewers.

Some of these videos may remain on YouTube, but they will not be eligible for monetization and are less likely to be recommended to users.

YouTube said creators should focus on producing original, high-quality content that provides meaningful value rather than relying entirely on AI-generated material.

The company also said it is working to distinguish useful and creative AI-assisted content from spam-like videos that are mass-produced and uploaded without meaningful value.

According to YouTube, AI tools remain welcome on the platform, but creators are encouraged to include authentic and original elements in their videos rather than relying entirely on automated content generation.

In its statement, YouTube said the latest update mainly provides greater clarity on its existing policies to help creators better understand the rules and avoid unexpected enforcement actions.
